Next Meeting on Tuesday, November 10!!
The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council's Writing Workshop will meet on Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the Pine Valley Library.
Anyone interested in the art and craft of writing is encouraged to attend. Recently we've had quite an influx of new writers attending, so don't be shy! Please invite your writing friends.
Bring 8-10 copies of a poem or a couple of pages of prose to be workshopped by the group, or just come along to offer support and advice to other writers.
We will also be holding a Write-In for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) on Saturday, November 21 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Bring your laptops, tablets, notebooks, and writing implements and be prepared to write!! We'll also have coffee, tea, and some eatables while we write and chat together. These gatherings are always enjoyable and productive, so please join us!
UPDATE: Immediately following the Write-In on Saturday, November 21, at 2:00 PM we'll be hosting local writer David J. Schmidt, author of Holy Ghosts: True Tales from a Haunted Christian College. David will share a story or two of the paranormal events at Point Loma Nazarene University, discuss the compiling and the publishing of his book, and will take our questions and sign books for us. Don't miss out on this wonderful treat!
We hope to see you on November 10 for our regular monthly meeting and on November 21 for our Write-In and author event!

"Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go."
~E.L. Doctorow (1931-2015)
So let's lessen the "nothing" of writing and "learn as [we] go"...by meeting with other writers as we explore the world of writing and finding a publishing home for our work...
...together.

Just bring about 8 copies of 1-2 pages of your poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoirs, plays, essays, and/or any other genre of writing, and we'll offer oral and written feedback. We're here to build each other up as writers in a warm, supportive environment.
Plus we have National Novel Writers Month (NaNoWriMo) coming up in November! Let's write together!!

So let's lessen the difficulty and loneliness of writing...by meeting with other writers as we journey together across the "Atlantic," bathtubs rafted together so that we can weather the storms and celebrate the "arrival" of publishing the results of our hard work

Next Meeting: July 14!
Greetings, Mountain Empire Writers!
We'll be meeting this Tuesday, July 14 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the Pine Valley Library. Anyone interested in learning more about the art and craft of writing is welcome to attend.
If you wish, bring 8-10 copies of a poem or a couple of pages of prose to read aloud and discuss with the group who will offer written feedback as well.
We'll also discuss publishing our work, including the highlights of last month's talk with Sarka-Jonae Miller of East County Magazine.
Also, July is Camp NaNoWriMo in which writers all over the world set their own writing goals and work toward meeting them in a less formal setting than November's National Novel Writing Month's 50,000 words-or-bust format.
So please come along and join the fun! We're a kind, encouraging, and accepting group, so there's no need to be shy!
Hoping to see you Tuesday!

Next Meeting: May 12!
The next meeting of the Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council's Writers' Workshop will be Tuesday, May 12 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the Pine Valley Library.

Author Pages on the Blog
Here on our blog, I have added separate author pages for those who have been attending our Tuesday night workshop meetings regularly. If you have not yet sent me your 350-500 word writing excerpt, links to any blog/website/published work(s), and a cover image and/or author photo of yourself, please e-mail them to me soon! Currently I have finished pages for Maureen, Linda, Judith, and myself if you'd like to see the contents of the finished pages.
Journaling Workshop
Our Journaling Workshop on April 18th was simply amazing. Many thanks, indeed, to Dean Nelson for kindly trekking up the mountain to share his writing wisdom and encouragement with us.

After the event, Judith wrote:
Dear fellow wordsmiths,
What a pleasure it was to
welcome you into a day of fellowship and discovery on Saturday! Truly, the
atmosphere was so delightful -- and insightful -- that I almost hated to face
the 4:00 exodus. It was its own thing, an organic and fluid time that
created mutual understanding and appreciation. That in itself is a "hope-for"
that doesn't always happen. You are a great band of explorers!
The skills and sensitivity and
humor of Dean Nelson was obviously the catalyst in creating a learning and
sharing environment. We were truly fortunate that he enjoys coming out here for
this purpose. Dean is a "pro" in every sense of the word, and equally or more
important, he is a perceptive and warmhearted and intuitively wise human being.
Our great thanks to him for the pertinent instruction and fun (yes!) and
inspiration!
Susanne and I were of the
opinion that this kind of gathering may well be viable as a twice-yearly
"class." Growing together? We'll examine that concept, and will certainly
welcome your input.
And finally, I know that Dean
and Susanne and I will all concur in wishing you a new surge of creativity, and
a steady awareness of your innate ability to "tell the story," and telling it in
such a way that it becomes a testimony to your life and to all life. GO,
GANG!!
Best to each of you,
Judith
April Is National Poetry Month
Yes, indeed! As spring showers (rare though they may be!) give birth to the glory of daffodils, lilac, and poppies here in the mountains, we also celebrate the birthing of the poetic spirit through National Poetry Month. The Academy of American Poets host a page for National Poetry Month chock full of ways to honor the poet in all of us. Be inspired by the poems and information on this site and perhaps write and share a new poem at our May meeting!
We very much hope to see many writers from the April 18 event attend future full-day workshops as well as our Tuesday night meetings.

April 18: All-Day Writing Workshop with Dean Nelson
Dr. Dean Nelson at the Writer's Symposium by the Sea |
With that in mind, we are thrilled to offer an exploratory workshop with Dean that will focus on:
Journaling: A Roadmap into Life
In the rush of busyness inherent in our technology-driven culture, we rarely have time to slow down, ponder, and consider our thoughts in the Light of faith. But when we put pen to paper--or fingers to keyboard--we rediscover our identity as thinking, creative beings. Dean Nelson, journalism professor and author of 11 books, will lead us in exploring a unique pathway to a fuller life which enables us to develop our creative, expressive, and vital selves through guided journaling exercises. Come explore the possibilities with us!
This all-day workshop will start with registration at 8:30 AM in Expedition Hall at the Pine Valley Bible Conference Center. The workshop will begin at 9:00 AM and will end around 4:00 PM. Lunch will be provided in the dining hall of the conference center.
The cost for this workshop is $30, including lunch.
